How luxury vinyl flooring will transform your home and your life

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is the best of every world you can think of. It's got high-end style, affordability, durability, waterproof capabilities, easy maintenance, and simple installation. Because it's waterproof, it's terrific for kitchens, baths, and laundry rooms, but because it's so highly designed, it's also excellent in the living and dining areas, as well as the bedroom. Again, we're starting to see it in some high-end homes where only authentic wood would ever be considered.

About LVF

Walk into our flooring store, and you'll be overwhelmed at how this product looks so much like authentic wood, stone, or tile, with the extensive availability of colors and patterns. The images are printed with 3-D photography and printed digitally so everything's ultra-clear, including the knots, raised grains, veinings, and vibrant colors. The material is also deeply embossed to give depth, dimension, and textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. It's finished with matte, gloss, or high gloss colors.

LVF can be cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards. Add a high-gloss finish, and your floors will look like they came out of the design pages. Although vinyl plank flooring is mainly associated with hardwood, many use planks to echo the stone looks. They feel the large format and few seams give it a more continuous look like quarried stone.

The other cut, called LVT flooring, consists of square tile-sized pieces. Many feel the extra seams add to the realism. Some take it even further by using grout, which now comes in many colors and is considered an important design tool.

Other benefits

This material is highly durable, with a clear melamine wear sheet that protects the floor from scratches, scuffs and keeps spills at the top, waiting to be wiped off. True luxury vinyl should be at least 8-mm thick. The wear layer is measured in mils, and that number should be 20.

It is also easy to care for, regularly (daily, if possible) sweeping and periodic mopping. Avoid wax and shine promoting cleaners, as they can damage the finish and dull the floor. If you feel your floors need more shine, seek the advice of a flooring expert.

Luxury vinyl flooring can be installed with the floating floor technique, where they click, mat, and hover over the subfloor. Subfloors need only be clean, dry, and level, but the installer will sometimes need to smooth them out; otherwise, imperfection will travel to the surface.
